Winter Technical Support [Antarctica]


 

Who are we?

Scott Base has been the hub of New Zealand's activities in Antarctica since 1957. It's remote, so the small team that works at this incredible location needs to work well together, focus on safety and integrate successfully into the small community lifestyle.


The role

You will be responsible for safely operating and maintaining New Zealand scientific installations in Antarctica and providing desktop and other Information Technology (IT) support services for Scott Base, with direction from the Christchurch IT Team. As part of this role you will receive training from NZ based science personal from different institutes on operating and maintaining experiments before departing for Scott Base.

Responsibilities include:

  • Providing hands on desktop and IT support services for Scott Base and event personnel.
    • This includes on premise VMware server infrastructure, running MS Exchange, SQL, SharePoint fileservers, building and asset management systems, Veeam, MECM, mail and web proxies etc in a largely Microsoft environment.
  • Operation and maintenance of long-term scientific instruments and equipment
  • Collection, recording, and updating data associated with experiments or operations
  • Coordination of laboratory facilities, including hazardous chemicals
  • Biological monitoring of the wastewater treatment plant and drinking water quality testing
  • Support visiting science events with provision and coordination of resources
  • Serve on the Scott Base Fire Crew

This is a thirteen-month 'summer/winter' role based in Antarctica from approximately September 2023 until October 2024.


What will you bring?

  • Relevant qualification (Diploma or degree) and experience in IT.
  • At least five years post qualification experience in hardware, computing and network support.
  • Strong diagnostics and repair skills.
  • Current NZ motor vehicle licence Class 1 and ability to drive a manual vehicle
  • Strong interpersonal communication skills and a customer service 'can do' attitude.
  • An attention to detail and willingness to learn new skills operating unique experiments.

Medical assessments

Antarctica is one of the most remote places on earth. Because of this, all successful applicants must be certified medically fit by Antarctic New Zealand's medical assessor. This assessment includes having up to date COVID-19 and influenza vaccinations.
